Broken Arrow is a lively city with a variety of activities and opportunities. Although founded in the 1830s, the city began a redevelopment and revitalization plan in 2005 to update and restore the downtown area. This process has sparked the expansion of museums, parks, a performing arts center, and even a farmers market. The revitalized historic downtown has preserved some of the town’s unique history, and the area now has a Performing Arts Center as well as a community playhouse theater. And with 70 miles of trails to walk, a skate park and a variety of golf courses, the town has a plethora of activities for families and homebuyers.
A community of Alabama Creek Natives settled in the Broken Arrow region after the Trail of Tears, naming the region Rekackv, meaning broken arrow, after their old home in Alabama. With much of Broken Arrow’s industry derived from agriculture and coal, the city did not grow much during the beginning of the 20th century. However, the creation of the Broken Arrow Expressway in the 1960s caused the region to grow into a thriving suburban area, making Broken Arrow homes some of the best in the Tulsa metro area.
The Broken Arrow Public School District, ranked number 38 in the state, has extremely high ratings for the clubs and activities they provide students and primarily services Broken Arrow. Portions of the city also fall under the Union Public School district, which is one of the highest-ranked school districts in the state. The area also provides great private schools. Many families opt to send their children to Lincoln Christian School, which is one of the top private schools in Oklahoma and sits just outside of the Broken Arrow zip code. Many others send their children to Summit Christian Academy, the number 1 private school in Broken Arrow and number 10 in the Tulsa area.
There are many family-friendly events and activates in Broken Arrow. Rooster Days, which happens to be the oldest festival in Oklahoma, happens annually in May, filled with rides, a parade, live music, and many more activities. Families can also enjoy a movie together at the well know Warren Theater. The retro-style theater boasts recliner seats, the largest screens in the Tulsa area and 40’s inspired dinners. And Broken Arrow’s Rhema Bible Church also hosts Rockets Over Rhema—a spectacular fireworks display every July, a Harvest Carnival every October, and millions of Christmas lights each year from Thanksgiving until New Year's Eve.
The Rose District, in historic downtown, is one of the city’s most prominent shopping centers and eateries. The area is filled with boutique shopping, art galleries, novelty shops, bakeries, bistros, spas, activities, and even hosts a farmers market with over 40 vendors Tuesday nights from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings April through October. Keep an eye open for even more scenic and unique shopping centers with both Aspen Creek and the Broken Arrow Expressway Corridor expanding their retail development.
